Technological Initiatives

  • Energy Conservation
  • Recycling
  • Reduced Paper & Packaging
  • Sustainability Central
  • As we purchase new equipment, we make a conscious effort to ensure it is energy efficient.
  • We support the use of fluorescent lighting in our facilities, and ensure lighting and equipment is turned off when not in use.
  • During the summer months, our operations reduce their lighting, as feasible.

In cooperation with our recycling partners, Hospitality Services makes every effort to recycle:

  • Paper
  • Glass
  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Cardboard
  • Toner Cartridges
  • Fryer oil
  • Computer Equipment

Hospitality Services is proud to be styrofoam-free since 2008. Bio-degradable and compostable paper products have been substituted as alternatives.

We work closely with our suppliers to choose products that offer less packaging wherever possible (ie bulk condiments, bulk milk, reduction in the amount of menu items that are "prepared" or come pre-packed). Where feasible, we have gone back to putting more emphasis on scratch cooking.

New products are always being sourced including craft plates, corn-base straws, and sugarcane take-out containers.

Napkin dispensers, introduced across campus, have greatly reduced napkin waste.

Some operations have further reduced plastic packaging by serving dine-in sandwiches wrapped in paper or waxed paper.

In conjunction with our cold beverage provider, we now collect all plastic wrap from cases of pop and juice, and return it to our supplier for bulk recycling.

Used toner cartridges are recycled as is used office paper.

In an effort to enhance and increase general awareness of the Hospitality Services Recycling program, Sustainability Central has been introduced. This is a highly visible program which has greatly impacted the recycling efforts in the units hosting these stations.
